best places to eat in teignmouth

The first question guests usually ask after being shown around the house is, what are the best places to eat in Teignmouth?  Many restaurants have shut down because of lockdown in other parts of the country but not in Teignmouth, and some have even been brave enough to open up! It may be small but there is still plenty of variety and the best places to eat in Teignmouth are within walking distance or a short trip away in Shaldon.

The best places to eat in Teignmouth

Fish Restaurants

Crab Shack on the Beach

The best fish restaurant in Teignmouth, the fish is caught first thing in the morning and reaches your plate that evening, and tastes divine. The Crab Shack has the best location in Teignmouth, looking out over the river Teignmouth and what is known as the back beach, so that you can watch the sun setting as you gorge yourself.  For pre or post-dinner drinks why not try the Lobster Lounge, sister company to the CS, they have over 150 Gins and 80 wines and serve tapas, or there are 2 different pubs next door where you can also enjoy the view and a drink. The atmosphere on summer nights is relaxed, welcoming and lively, probably the liveliest in Teignmouth. Of course, the Crab Shack also has a vegetarian and a meat option for those who don’t like fish.

The Salty

Small and unpretentious. If that sounds like being damned by faint praise, it isn’t, the fish is also freshly caught that day and there are vegetarian and vegan options too. The Salty

International Restaurants

The Owl and the Pussycat

Delicious, pricey but highly recommended European food, in a charming little house with a secluded garden. There is an emphasis on natural, sustainable food, sourced from the local area and the use of seasonal ingredients. The best spot in Teignmouth for a romantic meal. The Owl and The Pussycat.

The Clipper Cafe

A long walk, short drive or short ferry ride away in Shaldon, but worth it for the great food and more lovely views over the river back to Teignmouth. The Clipper Cafe.

Ode

No mention yet of what is happening at the main restaurant after 17th May but definitely recommended as Shaldon’s only nationally reviewed restaurant, (it got a very good one!). Another restaurant that emphasizes local sourcing, sustainability and seasonal ingredients that has rave reviews. The Ode cafe is open and is highly recommended too.

The View

Another restaurant with a great view, this one is on the top floor of the Pavillions Theatre and looks out over the sea and the pier, the food is not terribly exciting, burgers and pizza mainly, but it is good. The View.

Trade Winds

For the hungry! The portions are enormous, really enormous, there is a lot of variety but the greek dishes are the best. Trade Winds.

Indian Restaurants

Teign Indian Cuisine

The best Indian restaurant in Teignmouth, you have to book in advance because the dining area is small, but it is worth the effort. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and the food is amazing.

Naz

Been around for years now, very lively and popular. Naz.

Royal Indian Restaurant

Quite new to Teignmouth but has built a following and gets good reviews. Royal Indian.

Italian Restaurants

Franco’s

Authentic Italian food, all the usual suspects, cooked to perfection. Franco’s is very popular and has justifiably been so for many years.

L’invidia pizzeria

Opening on 17th May so no reviews yet. L’invidia

Pubs that serve food

The New Quay Inn and the Ship Inn serve food, in separate, comfortable dining rooms away from the pub area, but no word yet as to what will happen after 17th May. Until then you can take your drink outside and sit on the benches or the beach and watch the sun go down in the best spot for doing so in Teignmouth.

The Jolly Sailor is a nice pub selling “Pub classics” lovingly defrosted and deep fat fried for you!
