The best places to eat in Teignmouth

Within walking distance of Woodlands

Crab Shack on the Beach

The Crab Shack has the best location of any restaurant in Teignmouth. Looking out over the river Teign and the back beach you may well be lucky enough to catch a spectacular sunset while you eat. However, the view is not the only reason to go to the Crab Shack, the food is rightly very highly regarded and while primarily a fish restaurant ,specializing in locally caught fish, there are also vegetarian and meat options. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with a maritime theme and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Booking in advance is recommended as this is a rightly popular place.

The View

Another restaurant with a great view but not of the river beach this time. The View is on the top floor of the Pavillions Theatre and looks out over the sea and the pier, the food is mainly burgers and pizza, good and reasonably priced. Also open during the day as a cafe. The View.

Opened in March 2024 this is another restaurant with a great view of the sea and pier. Open during the day as a cafe it serves meals until 8pm at the weekend.

Trade Winds

Although this is a restaurant with a varied menu and not a specifically Greek one, this is the place to come for Greek food in Teignmouth. It is also the place to go if you are very hungry, the portions are big and the atmosphere is lively with plate smashing not unknown! Run by the same family since 1967 it is usually very busy and very popular. Trade Winds.

Large and cavernous and generally pretty noisy, the food is the same as at every other Weatherspoons but the prices are low!

Indian Restaurants in Teignmouth

Teign Indian Cuisine

The best Indian restaurant in Teignmouth, you have to book in advance because the dining area is small, but it is worth the effort. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and the food is amazing, the restaurant of choice for curry lovers.

Been around for years now, very lively and popular. Naz.

Royal Indian Restaurant

Quite new to Teignmouth but has built a following and gets good reviews. Royal Indian.

Pubs that serve food in Teignmouth

The Ship Inn serves food in a separate, comfortable dining room away from the pub area. It is not a big menu but the food is good and it has gluten free and vegan options. A very popular pub, along with the New Quay Inn, as they both have benches on the back beach so that you can watch the sun go down in the best spot for doing so in Teignmouth.

The Jolly Sailor is a nice pub selling “Pub classics” and it does a great roast on a Sunday. Has a garden which is very popular in summer.

A short journey away to Shaldon

Shaldon is a long walk, short drive or short ferry ride away, close enough to be visible from your bedroom window. The ferry is reputed to be the oldest ferry service in England but it does stop operating around dusk or in bad weather so while it may get you to dinner, you will need a taxi back.

The Clipper Cafe

The Clipper is a cafe during the day but operates as a restaurant in the evening with a menu emphasizing local, seasonal produce. The short journey is worth it as the food is excellent and there are more lovely views over the river back to Teignmouth. The Clipper Cafe

The London Inn

The London Inn serves what it describes as ‘best of British’ dishes, in other words, traditional English food that changes with the seasons but also serving ever popular burgers. It has a relaxed and warm atmosphere, the only drawback is that the last order for food is 8.30.

The Ness

The Ness can be seen from your bedroom! It serves traditional pub food but also small plates and sharing platters and a good variety of puddings. Great views and a lively atmosphere.

Cafe Ode

Café Ode was an award winning restaurant but currently is concentrating on just being a café  with excellent food and it also has pizza pop ups. There are plans for more but they are under wraps at the moment.

The Bucket and Spade

The Bucket and Spade in Shaldon is not in walkable distance but the views over Lyme Bay may make up for that. Recently refurbished and providing ‘casual all-day dining’ breakfast, lunch and dinners are available as well as a cafe service throughout the day. The food relies heavily on local suppliers and has a large GF, vegetarian and vegan selection. Recently awarded Gold in the Best Restaurant & Pub category and Silver in the Best Bar category at the Food Drink Devon Awards.

The Elizabethan Inn

A short drive away in Luton, the Elizabethan Inn dates back to the 16th Century and describes itself as a traditional pub that serves Good, Honest, Devon food. As you would expect all the food is sourced locally whenever possible and includes fish, game, meat and vegetarian options.
